Meeting immediate needs with dignity and care

How we support our community

Food is often the first way we meet people — and sometimes the first step toward hope. We serve everyone without discrimination, based on our capacity to assist. When someone walks through our doors, they are met with dignity, compassion, and practical support. Those most at risk of food insecurity include seniors, children, single-parent households, individuals living with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, and minority families.

Rising costs and unexpected crises can impact anyone. When that happens, we are here. As a proud member of the Windsor-Essex Food Bank Association, we work collaboratively with other local food banks to ensure responsible stewardship, shared resources, and coordinated support across the region.

Our food bank provides non-perishable items and fresh food (when available) to individuals and families experiencing food shortages. Often, a food visit opens the door to conversation about additional supports and community programs that may help stabilize and strengthen a household.

How it works

We offer a dignified, choice-based food distribution model. Instead of receiving a pre-packed hamper, clients select the food items they need — similar to shopping in a grocery store. This approach:

  • Restores choice and personal dignity
  • Reduces the stress often associated with asking for help
  • Allows families to select foods that suit their needs and preferences

Our goal is not only to address immediate hunger, but to offer ongoing encouragement, practical support, and hope for the future.

Eligibility

  • Residency Requirement: Clients must reside in Leamington, Ontario or a nearby community.
  • Demonstrated Need: Assistance is available to individuals and families with low income, those experiencing financial hardship, or those facing a crisis or emergency situation.
  • Frequency: Local households may access the Food Bank once per month (approximately every 30 days) by appointment.
  • Identification: Please bring valid identification for each household member to every visit. This helps us keep records accurate and ensures we are serving our community fairly and responsibly.

Intake process

New clients are required to complete an intake appointment with a staff member during their first visit. This allows us to gather basic information to better understand each household’s needs and ensure appropriate support. As part of this process, client information is entered into the Link2Feed database, a secure system shared among member agencies of the Windsor-Essex Food Bank Association.

This helps maintain accurate records, prevent duplication of services, and ensure fair and consistent access to food assistance across the region. After intake is complete, a volunteer will accompany the client to our Food Bank, where they may select the food items that best meet their household’s needs.

Ongoing appointments

Following the initial intake, clients may be required to meet with a staff member sporadically or at least once per year for a file update, or sooner if there are changes such as income, address, or household size.

For regular monthly visits, upon arrival to a scheduled appointment, clients may check in and proceed directly to the Food Bank with a volunteer. Please remember to bring your own reusable bags or boxes to carry your food items home. We encourage clients to arrange transportation in advance, as we are not able to offer delivery services and food hampers can be substantial. A vehicle, support person, or small cart/wagon can be very helpful. Planning ahead helps ensure a smooth and positive visit for everyone.
